As we enter the eighth week of lockdown, I just wanted to update you on some of the latest activity that SELECT is currently undertaking on your behalf.
As well as the 30% refund of 2020 Membership subscriptions announced by SELECT President Kevin Griffin yesterday, we are also working in three key areas to assist Members:
Update on planned return to work
SELECT continues to lead the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum, a collective of Scotland’s largest trade and professional bodies who are busy gathering intelligence, sharing advice and speaking directly with government on the issues affecting us all.
For the last few weeks, the Forum has been involved in a Restarting Construction Sub-Group, which is chaired by Kevin Stewart MSP, the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning.
At the latest meeting on Friday 8 May, discussions were held about the restart plan and Standard Operating Procedure documents that had been submitted to officials at Health Protection Scotland for approval, which included work restarting on commercial and domestic sites. The Minister is committed to working closely with the industry to get the plan signed off as soon as possible, and while he wouldn’t commit to a date for a restart, what was made clear is that construction would be one of the first industries to return to work, albeit on a phased basis.
To help support this, the Forum is now working on a series of guidance documents that will help businesses as they return to work. Advice on employment and contractual issues and health and safety – including a COVID-19 toolbox talk – are all in preparation and an update will be issued shortly.

Digital drop-in No2
Following our first session last week, SELECT will be hosting another Digital Drop-In webinar for Members on Friday 15 May to answer your questions.
Running from 10am to 12pm, the live online session will see SELECT staff on hand to offer advice on technical, training and membership issues.
The Drop-In will also include an update on recent changes in employment law that you may have missed during the COVID-19 crisis.

Key worker posters now available
SELECT is distributing new protective signage to help Members carrying out emergency and essential electrical work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Designed to be displayed on sites, in vans and in customers’ windows, the posters and stickers carry the legend ‘Key worker on site: carrying out essential work’ and have been designed to deflect recent harassment directed at contractors.
The signage will now alert the public that any SELECT Members seen in streets, homes and on site aren’t flouting rules, but are performing vital roles in line with Government guidelines.
