SELECT welcomes new Chair of Local Authority Building Standards Scotland

SELECT has welcomed the appointment of James Whiteford as Chair of Local Authority Building Standards Scotland (LABSS), the organisation representing building standards verifiers in Scotland.

Mr Whiteford, who is the Lead Building Standards Surveyor (West) for Scottish Borders Council, took the reins from Dave Aitken, Team Leader Building Standards Dundee City Council, at the organisation’s AGM and Conference at Discovery Quay in Dundee on May 18.

He will now lead the organisation’s ongoing drive to protect the public interest by ensuring that all new buildings and those being altered, extended or converted comply with the building regulations and technical standards.

Dave Forrester, Head of Technical Services at SELECT, said: “SELECT has long campaigned for and supported approved certification and we stand firmly with James as he takes responsibility for this vitally important role of protecting and preserving the integrity of the built environment.

“LABSS has been a supporter of the certification services our members offer and parts of the regime work very well. However, we are keen to work with James and his colleagues in LABSS to help develop greater use of the scheme.

Mr Whiteford said: “SELECT is the leading electrical body in Scotland which has been a consistent supporter of the Approved Certifier of Construction Schemes and I look forward to working with them and other Scheme providers to encourage greater use of this service.

“I would like to record my appreciation for the invaluable work carried out by my predecessor in the Chair and I would hope that, with the support of bodies such as SELECT, we can introduce real change to the Scottish building standards system.”
