Sickness Benefit and Health Scheme

How long is sickness benefit paid out for?
Sickness benefit is payable to operatives for 26 weeks. once the 26 weeks is up the operative cannot claim again for a 1 year period. Staff members can claim up to 18 weeks sickness benefit in a two year period.

How much sickness benefit do operatives and staff get paid?
Depending on the grade of the operative the payments range from £70 per week up to £170 per week. This is payable after 2 weeks waiting time. Staff members receive between £53 - £226 per week depending on salary.

How do I claim sickness benefit?
The member firm will complete a claim form and send it to the SJIB along with copies of any sick lines.

How do I join BUPA?
An application form can be downloaded from the SELECT or SJIB website or can be posted out to the home address. This should then be completed and returned for processing.

What do I do if I need private medical treatment?
You have to be referred by your GP to a BUPA registered consultant, once you have an appointment to see the consultant you would phone the SJIB and they will get BUPA to call you and give you an authorisation number for the appointment.

Is there an excess on BUPA cover?
Yes there is an excess of £150 for operatives and £100 for staff members, this is payable once every scheme year which runs from 1 September to 31 August each year, you should be aware that treatment received over 2 scheme years will attract 2 excess payments whether or not the treatment is continuous.

How much is the Death in Service benefit?
The death benefit amount is £17,000 for operatives and £30,000 for staff members. There is also an accident on site benefit of £50,000 for operatives killed on site, which is added to the normal £17,000.

Do apprentices get the death in service benefit?
Apprentices do not get bought a welfare credit however they are covered for half the normal death benefit amount, this is £8,500 and £25,000 if killed on site.
