Recent price spikes in critical materials have raised concerns about resource security. Scotland relies on imports for many of its raw materials, and competition from emerging economies means that there may be future risks to supplies, particularly of critical materials such as rare earth elements, indium, lithium, phosphorous etc, but there are also risks for more ubiquitous materials such as copper. Governments around the world are responding – in the US, EU, and recently the UK with its own Resource Security Action Plan. This is your opportunity to let Scottish Government know what the key issues are for business, and what policies and support you would like to see in place. For further information and to register for the event, please click here.
This event is being organised by SEPA and Zero Waste Scotland, on behalf of the Scottish Government, as part of their consultation on ‘‘Safeguarding Scotland’s Resources – a programme for efficient use of our resources’’.

The controversial BESNA reforms of the M&E sector have been officially killed off.
A statement from the Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association today said: ” In consultation with the remaining companies and following discussions with Unite, it has been agreed that HVCA will withdraw its proposal for the Building Engineering Services National Agreement (BESNA).
“As a result of today’s decision by HVCA, Unite has agreed not to pursue further industrial action or protests against the BESNA companies.
“HVCA, supported by its member companies, will now engage in high-level talks with Unite within an agreed timeline, with the aim of creating new proposals and ensuring agreed terms are honoured.”

SELECT are delighted to announce the introduction of a new course. This course has been developed following a successful pilot earlier this year. The pilot course gave us the chance to get feedback from Member companies who either have or were intending to go through the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) process. This feedback has been acted upon and we are confident that this course will be of real benefit to those who attend.
This one day workshop is designed for companies that are interested in gaining MCS certification. Everyone who attends the course will also receive copies of sample documents that can be used to help build the Quality System needed to successfully gain MCS certification.
This course takes prospective installers through the scheme requirements, required quality forms, training requirements and the audit and administration process. The course shows how the MCS requirements link with the documents required for SELECT membership. The final outcome of the course will be a gap analysis report which the attendee can complete during the training process and follow up at their workplace.
The course is available to SELECT members for £160.00 + VAT.
Grant support of 25% will be available from the EETF.
Further information on the MCS Certification Scheme can be found at www.clescotland.co.uk or by contacting 01698 244 694.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Alan Ross, Chief Executive of the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust(SECTT).
Born in St Andrews, Alan spent his early years in South Africa before returning to the UK and to Edinburgh where he served his electrical apprenticeship with the National coal Board. He worked as an electrician for John G Mackintosh and also in far off Australia before finding his way back home once more to join SECTT in the mid 1990s.
By the late 90s he was leading the organisation and under his thoughtful and steady stewardship SECTT flourished, becoming one of the most respected industry training organisations in the UK.
Alan worked in close co-operation with the Scottish Joint Industry Board, SELECT, Unite the Union and SummitSkills to deliver industry-led training and his advice and guidance will be missed by all, including politicians across all parties in Holyrood.
Alan is survived by his wife Val and his daughters Nicole, Leanne and Tricia.

Trevor Hursthouse, chairman of the Specialist Engineering Contractors’ (SEC) Group, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Mr Hursthouse, who has been employed in construction and building services engineering for over 40 years, has been a member of the board of SEC Group since its inception in 1993, and has served as its chairman since 1999.
In recent years, he has been instrumental, along with SEC Group colleagues, in bringing about an in-depth re-examination by Government of existing construction contracts legislation – an exercise which led tothe introduction of the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act, which contains measures designed to improve payment security and adjudication procedures.
This legislation, which is now on the statute book, will come into force later in the year.
“In an industry that sometimes appears sadly short on true leadership, Trevor Hursthouse stands out as a truly inspirational figure with a profound knowledge of its culture and working practices, and theproblems and concerns of the small and medium-sized enterprisesthat represent its lifeblood,” commented SEC Group president LordO’Neill of Clackmannan.
“His consultative, consensual and commonsense approach to the key issues has long been appreciated in Government circles – with the result that his wise counsel is often sought by ministers and officials alike.
“I am delighted that Trevor has received this well-deserved recognitionof his valuable contribution to the life and work of the construction sector, and to British business as a whole.”
Among the key issues in which SEC group is currently involved are: the status of Government as “best practice client”; integration of the supply chain and minimisation of waste; and the use of project bank accounts and integrated project insurance.
At the National Training Awards for Scotland in Glasgow on 23rd Sept 2010, SELECT Member company Stewart McNee (Dunoon) Ltd, won the Regional and Scottish National awards in the Medium Employer category and will now go forward to represent Scotland at the UK awards ceremony in London.
The National Training Awards, managed by UK Skills and delivered in Scotland by Skills Development Scotland, are the premier accolade for training and development in the UK. The event at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow was sponsored by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and Dr Janet Brown, SQA Chief Executive said,
“SQA is delighted to be the sponsor of the 2010 National Training Awards in Scotland. This year’s awards are full of inspirational stories and magnificent achievements from individuals and organisations. To all who were entered, and particularly to those who made it through to the awards ceremony, well done. You represent the absolute best of Scottish training, learning and development and how this creates impact and achieves success. You should take enormous pride in your achievements.”
The Awards identify and celebrate organisations and individuals that have achieved outstanding business and personal success through investment in training. They are unique because entries are received from all sectors, industries and areas across the UK and in return the entrants are provided with the unique opportunity to have their training judged against the best in the UK.
Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning Keith Brown highlighted the vital role that training makes to the economy. Mr. Brown said,
“This Government recognises that an appropriately skilled Scottish workforce now and for the future is key to achieving sustainable economic growth. Our economic strategy rests on capitalising on Scotland’s greatest comparative advantage – our people. This year’s finalists have demonstrated that, despite the challenges presented by the downturn, they are determined to continue to invest the time and money required to develop the skills of their staff, maximise their potential and create highly motivated and productive workforces.”
Ian McNee, Managing Director of Stewart McNee (Dunoon) Ltd, reflected the importance of the award as recognition of the companies continued commitment to training.
Mr. McNee said;
”Our investment in training ensures that our customers maximise the return on their investment. Craftsmanship and Quality can only come from highly trained and valued employees. The sustained development of our company and our employees ensures that we deliver the best quality and value to our clients and partners”.

Crown House has gold-plated its success at this year’s SELECT electrotechnical awards, adding the blue ribbon Contractor of the Year title to its victory in the Electrical Safety category.
SELECT is the trade association for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland and holds the awards in conjunction with CABLEtalk Magazine. In the five years the awards have been running, they have quickly established themselves as the beacon of best practice in the industry.
Crown House was complimented for its overall performance and its ongoing commitment to improving the way it works and the standards it sets.
The award was presented at a high profile dinner held on 1 October at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel. Attended by 360 guests the evening is one of the major highlights in the electrical industry’s calendar.
Collecting the accolade on the evening, Colin O’Brien at Crown House said: “Winning the Contractor of the Year award really tops off a wonderful evening and we are absolutely thrilled. We are very proud as a business to have been recognised in this way and will be working hard to build on our success in the future.”
The judges had nothing but praise for Crown House and commenting on the entry said: “This member is consistently leading the electrical contracting industry by constantly striving to improve standards and safety by investing in its staff and ensuring that clients get value for money and a quality job delivered on time.”
Newell McGuiness, managing director at SELECT, added: “Consistently delivering excellent standards and always seeking to improve those standards takes a very strong focus from staff across the company as a whole. Crown House proved it can do this and its success tonight is well deserved.”
This year the awards welcomed two new sponsors in Metrel and Vaillant and were also supported by industry partners Voltimum, Megger, SummitSkills, The Electrical Safety Council, Yell.com, Electricfix and Schneider Electric.
Family run Aberdeen business West End Electrical has taken top honours in the 2010 SELECT electrotechnical awards.
SELECT is the trade association for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland and over the course of five years its awards have established themselves as the ultimate kitemark of quality in the sector.
West End Electrical took on and beat all comers in the best small contractor category and received its prize in front of 360 guests at the lavish award ceremony, held in Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel on 1 October.
Graeme Craib at West End Electrical was thrilled to receive the award on behalf of the company and said: “So often smaller firms do not get a chance to shine and show how hard they are working for customers who they have often been serving for many years. We are delighted to have won this award and it is a wonderful reward for all of our efforts.”
The judges were particularly impressed by the company’s ability to service large and small customers alike and also by the longstanding relationship they enjoyed with many of them – a sure sign of the high level of service West End Electrical provides customers with.
The judges said: “This contractor has a wide range of loyal clients from health boards to car showrooms and supermarkets as well as many domestic customers. Many of these customers have been repeat clients for over 20 years. The many testimonials from clients prove this family run business is highly valued and a great example to all in the industry.”
Newell McGuiness, managing director at SELECT, added: “SELECT works as hard for its smaller members as it does for the larger contractors in the market and we are delighted to be able to recognise the achievements of West End Electrical, which has set a standard that is a credit to the entire industry.”
This year the awards welcomed two new sponsors in Metrel and Vaillant and were also supported by industry partners Voltimum, Megger, SummitSkills, The Electrical Safety Council, Yell.com, Electricfix and Schneider Electric
A rigorous approach to apprentice training has seen Crown House shine in the electrical safety category of this year’s SELECT Electrotechnical Awards.
SELECT is the trade association for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland and the glamorous gala event was held in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow on 1 October and attended by 360 industry luminaries.
Colin O’Brien at Crown House picked up the award on the night and said: “This is truly wonderful and to receive industry backing for what we are doing is very pleasing. Safety has to be at the core of everything we do and we are very happy to have come out on top in these awards.”
The judges were particularly impressed by the thorough approach taken to apprentice training and commented: “This entry showed great initiative in order to ensure that apprentices were given extra training on the practical skills of inspection and testing that they required to ensure they were safe and competent whilst working on electrical installations.”
Now in their fifth year, the awards set the standard in the industry and are sought after prizes for every company in the country.
Newell McGuiness, managing director at SELECT, said: “Our members work in an environment that can often be dangerous and making safety second nature for individuals is the only way to keep people safe. Crown House has clearly thought long and hard about how it does this and its focus on this area is to be applauded.”
Shetland Council has been victorious in prestigious industry awards for its green approach to electricity production on the islands.
The council won in the high profile environmental category at this year’s SELECT Electrotechnical Awards, held in association with CABLEtalk Magazine. It received the prize in front of 360 guests at the showcase dinner held on 1 October at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel.
SELECT is the trade association for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland and its awards are regarded as the pinnacle of achievement in the sector.
William Spence at Shetland Council was delighted to receive the award and he/she said: “Being so close to nature on the islands, the environment is a major priority for us. Winning this award is a fantastic accolade for Shetland Council and we look forward to building further on the work we have done.”
The council won the award for the community heating scheme it has developed that serves schools, hospitals and around 1000 homes in the Lerwick area.
Commenting on the scheme the judges said: “The scheme burns waste in order to generate heat, thus saving land fill and generating an income by taking waste from other authorities and the offshore industry.”
They applauded the scheme for both its efficiency and the benefits it brought to the community as a whole.
Newell McGuiness, managing director at SELECT, added his commendation to that of the judges and said: “Shetland Council has come up with a fantastic scheme to win this award and hopefully its example will be followed by others across the UK as we seek to successfully address the environmental challenges we all face.”
This year the awards welcomed two new sponsors in Metrel and Vaillant and were also supported by industry partners Voltimum, Megger, SummitSkills, The Electrical Safety Council, Yell.com, Electricfix and Schneider Electric.
GA Barnie has picked up the training gong in the SELECT Electrotechnical Awards in front of 360 guests at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel.
SELECT is the trade association for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland and the showcase awards dinner took place on 1 October.
Commenting on GA Barnie’s success in the training category, the judges said: “This company took a near miss as a positive reason to revisit and review the training of operatives to ensure that safe isolation was the top priority and that staff were given both the training and the equipment to make sure that they and the rest of the work force were safe at work.”
This practical application of training saw the business beat off stiff competition and Jimmy Miller at GA Barnie said: “We believe that we have learned from a past incident that could have been a lot more serious and used it to improve the training we give to employees and the safety of the environment they now work in. We are very proud of this achievement and very proud it has been voted as top training initiative at this year’s awards.”
The awards celebrated their fifth anniversary this year and have become a recognised beacon of achievement throughout the industry.
Managing director at SELECT, Newell McGuiness, commented: “Training and safety are two of the uppermost priorities in our industry and so it is excellent to see them both dovetail so effectively in the work that GA Barnie is doing. This sort of integrated approach is what sets the best firms apart.”
Speed does not have to come at the expense of service as Fife Council has proved in this year’s SELECT Electrotechnical Awards, held in association with CABLEtalk Magazine.
SELECT is the trade association for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland and its benchmark awards are now into their fifth year.
Fife Council came out top amidst tough competition in the Customer Service category and was praised for its efforts at working faster and more efficiently for customers and dramatically improving the service they received.
The judges commented: “The team were faced with the task of improving the efficiency of the electrical maintenance team. They came up with various changes which have been extremely effective in reducing the time to get to jobs and in arranging to carry out the work at a time that suited tenants.”
The award was presented at a glamorous red carpet gala dinner, held on 1 October at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel.
Allan Barclay at Fife Council who picked up the award on the evening, said: “Our success is testament to the effort we are putting in to get things right for our customers. The SELECT Awards have been good for us and we also won in the electrical safety category last year.”
Commenting on Fife’s victory, managing director at SELECT, Newell McGuiness, said: “Winning an award in one year is an excellent performance, but to win in consecutive years demonstrates a level of consistency that is difficult to achieve and Fife Council must be very proud of their efforts.”
This year the awards welcomed two new sponsors in Metrel and Vaillant and were also supported by industry partners Voltimum, Megger, SummitSkills, The Electrical Safety Council, Yell.com, Electricfix and Schneider Electric.
McKissock Electrical has won over the judges in this year’s SELECT Electrotechnical Awards, picking up the prize in the marketing category and building on a successful history in the competition.
Making a name for itself with its marketing campaign, the judges said McKissock had been highly imaginative in its promotional activity: “This applicant showed great imagination in the many ways it used to get the message over to potential clients that it was a quality contractor with a reputation for going the extra mile.”
The campaign used the company website, Yellow Pages, taxis, vans, the position of its new office and charity events to name but a few of the ways in which it got its message out there.
Based in Ayr and established in 1987, the business has fought hard to establish itself and the marketing work is making sure its light is not hidden under a bushel.
John McKissock at the company collected the award at the glittering award ceremony, held at Glasgow’s top tier Radisson Blu Hotel on 1 October and attended by 360 guests.
He said: “This has been a wonderful night for the business and this award means that our marketing efforts will now be heard throughout Scotland as well as in our local area. In today’s market you have to make yourself visible and we have worked hard to get out there and win business.”
SELECT is the trade association for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland and managing director Newell McGuiness was quick to congratulate McKissock it its achievement.
He said: “In a very competitive market, businesses have to be proactive about winning customers and promoting themselves. McKissock has not only done this, but it has also done it with great flair and imagination and its award is well justified.”

25-year old Greg Russell has won the coveted title of Apprentice of the Year at this year’s SELECT electrotechnical Awards, held in conjunction with CABLEtalk Magazine.
SELECT is the trade association for the electrotechnical industry in Scotland and its awards, now in their fifth year, represent the pinnacle of achievement for those in the electrical sector.
The SJIB/Edmundson Apprentice of the Year Award encourages, recognises and rewards electrical apprentices who have demonstrated that they have attained the highest standard of academic and technical competence and displayed excellent personal qualities in their education and training as an electrical apprentice.
Greg, who works for A Alexander & Son (Electrical) in Glasgow, has shone in all areas, beating over 400 other apprentices to the title.
The award was presented at the glittering awards ceremony, held at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel on 1 October and attended by 360 of the electrical industry’s leading practitioners.
Greg said: “I wish to continue my training to enhance my performance as an electrician and learn different areas of the industry. Eventually I would like to start my own business and grow it into a recognised and established company. I really enjoy working as an electrician and want to be the best I can possibly be.”
Greg is also a keen footballer and enjoys doing up and modifying cars in his spare time.
Commenting on Greg’s victory, Newell McGuiness, managing director at SELECT, said: “Attracting new people into our industry is hugely important and it is essential that we give them the very best training to allow them to develop and carry our sector forward. People like Greg are the future for our industry and judging by his achievement tonight, that future is in safe hands. I wish him well in completing his training and making a career for himself in the years to come.”
This year the awards welcomed two new sponsors in Metrel and Vaillant and were also supported by industry partners Voltimum, Megger, SummitSkills, The Electrical Safety Council, Yell.com, Electricfix and Schneider Electric.

Our 2010 SELECT Brand promotion campaign is just about to start.
Once again we are using broadcast technology because this has the biggest impact and because, using this medium, we can reach all of Scotland - including the islands.
The basis of the campaign will be television ads across all of the STV area. The areas not covered by STV (Borders and Dumfries and Galloway) will be covered by radio broadcasts on Radio Borders and West Sound. This is because of the extreme cost-ineffective nature of Tyne Tees television. The broadcasts on Radio Borders and West Sound will be much more 'dense' than the TV ads.
In central Scotland, the TV Ads will be overlaid by radio broadcasts on Real Radio.
North of the central belt, an additional 'layer' of TV Ads will be used to top up the broadcast density in the former Grampian TV area.
Please note that these broadcast ads can only be effective for your business if you actively associate yourself with the SELECT logo by carrying it on vehicles, stationery and other promotional literature.
If you need electronic versions of the logo, please contact Heather Martin on 0131 445 5577. If you need van stickers, these are available free of charge from Susan Humphries on the same number.

SELECT are delighted to announce the launch of two new courses.
These courses have been created in partnership with RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) and have been tailor made for the electrical contracting industry.
As well as gaining an understanding of the legislation/ guidance surrounding each topic, attendees will also get advice on practical ways to implement what is learned in their own workplace.
On each course attendees will create personalised action plans to assist their organisation to manage health and safety more effectively.
Attendees will also be sign-posted to additional sources of support and guidance that can be used on return to the workplace.
Delegates will be issued with a copy of the ‘Easy Guide to Health and Safety’; This reference text provides practical guidance and solutions to typical hazards and risks, as well as handy checklists and forms to meet your organisations health and safety needs.
The aim for both courses is that attendees will leave with a clear understanding of key health and safety requirements how to implement the lessons learned through attending the workshops on return to the workplace.
Robust health and safety management systems underpin efficient and effective organisations and can improve the ‘bottom line’ by reducing costs.
The consequences of poor health & safety management are high, as demonstrated by the following HSE Statistics (2009)
• 1.2 million people who worked during the last year were suffering from an illness (long standing as well as new cases) they believed was caused or made worse by their current or past work. 551 000 of these were new cases.
• 180 workers were killed at work, a rate of 0.6 per 100 000 workers.
• 131 895 other injuries to employees were reported under RIDDOR, a rate of 502.2 per 100 000 employees.
• 246 000 reportable injuries occurred, according to the Labour Force Survey, a rate of 870 per 100 000 workers.
• 29.3 million days were lost overall (1.24 days per worker), 24.6 million due to work-related ill health and 4.7 million due to workplace injury.
On a more positive note there are many benefits to health & Safety training.
Reduced employee absence and turnover, fewer accidents, a reduced threat of legal action, improve productivity, improved standing among suppliers and partners, a better reputation.
This one-day course has been designed for business owners and senior managers who have responsibility for implementing health & safety management systems in the workplace.
This course looks at what is required of the Director/ Senior Manager in relation to health & safety. Consideration is given to the essential principles of planning for health & safety, the importance of the topic as a corporate governance issue.
Time is also spent looking at how to ‘build’ Health & Safety into the organisation and effectively deliver health and safety related messages leading to improved employee engagement.
This practical one-day workshop is designed to give attendees the knowledge and confidence to carry out’ suitable and sufficient’ risk assessments in the workplace.
This course looks at the requirements for assessing risk, the stages of risk assessment and risk control strategies.
Attendees will get the chance to under-take risk assessments linked to typical workplace scenarios.
Managing Health & Safety: An Introduction – 14th June 2010 - Edinburgh (SELECT Member cost £190+VAT)
Risk Assessment Workshop – 15th June 2010 – Edinburgh (SELECT Member cost £160+VAT)

The House of Commons Business and Enterprise Committee 'Construction matters' Report highlighted the burden that multiple public sector pre-qualification schemes impose on construction firms – particularly small and medium
enterprises (SMEs). In the current economic climate it was essential to reduce duplication and thereby prevent time and effort being wasted on repeating unnecessary tasks.

Scotland's industry recognised a lifetime of tireless service by conferring its Lifetime Achievement Award to Sir James Morrison-Low.
Sir James served as President from 1982-84 and is an Honorary Member of SELECT,
Sir James is also a much respected musician in Scottish piping circles.
SELECT, Scotland’s trade association for the electrical, electronics and communications systems industry, has made a major contribution to the welfare of the people who work or have worked in this highly-skilled sector.
Dougie Geddes, the president of SELECT, presented a cheque for £11,000 to the Electrical and Electronics Industries Benevolent Association, the only charity that exists to provide help to the needy and distressed of the electrical and electronics industries and any connected or allied industries and sciences in the UK.The magnificent sum was realised from the proceeds of SELECT’s own benevolent fund, which the trade body has run as a charity for decades. SELECT’s board decided to dissolve the fund in light of continually increasing costs entailed in auditing and compliance with regulations imposed by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.
SELECT also awarded a sum of £11,000 to its own Electrical Engineering Training Foundation. These monies will be ring-fenced in an account to provide funds and bursaries for people who would not otherwise be able to afford training.
Dougie Geddes, who made the presentation at Archerfield Links Golf Club, East Lothian, said: “SELECT is more than pleased to be able to help EEIBA, which does such valuable work for people who have been involved in our industry. It is also gratifying to be able to direct such a substantial sum towards our own foundation.”
Jim Speirs, President of EEIBA, said: “Contributions such as SELECT’s make it so much easier for us to provide information and advice to families and individuals in need, provide grants and financial support. We cannot thank SELECT enough.”

SELECT, Scotland's trade association for the electrical industry, has been recognised in this year's CBI Trade Association Forum Awards, winning the prize in the Member Success category.
SELECT has been through a marked transformation over the last four years and it was the success of these changes and its improved ability to serve and represent members that saw it come out on top, ahead of stiff competition.
Founded in 1900, SELECT is the oldest electrical industry trade association in the world, and over recent years it has re-energised both itself and the services it offers to members.
For over 100 years SELECT's membership hovered around the 500 mark. In the last four years that figure has more than doubled to 1100 and is still rising, giving the association a more powerful voice for its members.
In announcing their decision the judges said: "SELECT's membership surge has given it a stronger voice in Scotland, and a more powerful lobbying presence with government and local authorities. Its member firms now undertake 90 percent of all electrical installations done in Scotland."
Newell McGuiness, SELECT's managing director was delighted by the win and added: "We have worked hard over recent years to make sure we are highly relevant to our members' day–to–day activities and that we offer them the support, information and representation that they want and need."
Looking forward he said: "The added strength our growing membership provides us with also means we are better positioned to fight their corner successfully and this is at the very heart of our focus for the future."
The Best Practice Awards ceremony took place at the Intercontinental London Park Lane Hotel on Thursday 24 July and was hosted by Sandi Toksvig.
The Trade Association Forum is dedicated to encouraging best practice among UK trade associations and seeks to promote the role of effective trade associations to government, industry and the wider public.
Its annual award ceremony has become the benchmark in good practice for trade associations throughout the UK.
